Don't bother with the main gate ticket booth unless you want to wait in a massive line. Hike the Ladder of Kotor path behind the walls to get the same views for free. If you pay the entry fee, go at sunrise to beat the cruise ship crowds and the mid-day heat. Bring at least two liters of water; the crumbling stairs are brutal. Your calves will hate you, but the perspective is unmatched.
