Skip the main theater if you’re short on time, but hit the planetarium for the high-res Southern Hemisphere night sky projection. It’s the only place in the village to learn the actual history of local mountaineering without reading a boring textbook. Spend 60 minutes here, preferably on a rainy day when the clouds hide the peaks. The cafe inside has decent coffee, which is a rare win in this remote corner of New Zealand.
