Skip the crowded museums and wander these 6th-century ruins right on the banks of the Shannon. The high crosses are the main event, so don't rush past them. Give it two hours maximum to walk the stone chapels and the old graveyard. It gets muddy, so wear actual shoes, not white sneakers. If you're driving through the Midlands, it’s a solid history lesson that doesn't feel like a boring high school field trip.
