Skip the plastic souvenir shops downtown and spend an hour here instead. You get a raw look at Wabanaki history through intricate birchbark containers and sharp exhibits on modern tribal sovereignty. It serves as a solid air-conditioned escape when the Acadia crowds get unbearable. Definitely browse the gift shop; it is the only reliable spot in Bar Harbor for legitimate, indigenous-made art. Don't expect a massive complex, but do expect actual substance over tourist fluff.
