Skip the crowds at other parks and head straight to the Lava River Cave. You get to walk through a mile-long volcanic tube, but bring a legit jacket because the temperature drops fast even in August. Spend your afternoon at Paulina Lake; the obsidian flows are worth the detour. Give yourself four hours to properly explore the crater rim. Grab a hoodie, pack some water, and don't bother with the overpriced gift shop souvenirs.
