Skip the crowded resort pools and head here for Hilo’s best snorkeling. The black sand is actually ground lava, and the tide pools are basically a free aquarium. You’re almost guaranteed to spot green sea turtles (honu) chilling on the rocks, but keep your distance—they’re protected. It gets packed on weekends, so aim for a Tuesday morning. Most Hilo day tours stop here for 45 minutes, but stay two hours to really explore the seawall.
