Stop at the lookout for the classic photo, but don't try driving down the 25% grade road yourself; it's local access only and car rentals won't cover it. Booking a 4WD safari or a private valley tour is the move to see the 1,450-foot Hi’ilawe Falls without the illegal hike. Spend two hours here catching the mist over the black sand beach. Most 'Big Island in a Day' tours stop here for the view, which is plenty.
