Don't bother driving the three hours from Sofia for just a quick photo. Spend at least three hours hiking the steep, uneven stone stairs for the best vantage points of the jagged red sandstone. The fortress walls basically bleed into the rock face, making for wild, surreal geometry. Skip the expensive private tours; you can easily explore the ruins on foot for a few bucks. If you have the budget, book the sunrise hot air balloon.
