Boarding a 19th-century ship that actually hunted whales hits different than reading about it in history class. Walk the creaky decks and climb into the cramped crew quarters to get a real sense of how miserable whaling life actually was. Spend about an hour here, preferably on a weekday morning to dodge the school groups. Make sure you check the masts for a bird's-eye view of the Mystic River. It's surprisingly raw.
