Forget the quick roadside stops; this is the Catlins' best photo op. The 20-minute walk in is easy, but the rocks near the upper falls are slick, so wear actual shoes, not slides. You get two levels of heavy-hitting water—climb to the top tier for the scale, but stay back if it's been raining hard. Aim for mid-morning light to catch the mossy greens without the harsh shadows. It’s free, fast, and better than Purakaunui.
