Walk straight to the three-story Tropical Forest; it is a literal sweatbox full of hundreds of live butterflies and a waterfall. It is the only part worth the extra entry fee. The rest of the galleries are free and house a massive collection of Māori carvings and actual Moa bones. Spend two hours here on a rainy Dunedin afternoon. Skip the gift shop and head to the planetarium for a deep dive into the southern night sky.
