Skip the main keep’s interior if you are in a rush and head straight for the ramparts. The 360-degree views of the Carrick Roads and the open sea easily outshine the exhibits. Spend about two hours wandering the defensive tunnels and gun emplacements. Grab a coffee at the café, then walk the coast path down to Gyllyngvase Beach. Go on a clear day or you will just be staring at gray mist.
