Show up during the peak bloom in late April or you’re paying for a lot of green vines. The massive wisteria tunnels look surreal, but the crowds are aggressive. Don't bother with expensive guided tours unless you need transport from Kitakyushu—the garden is manageable on your own. Buy your entry tickets well in advance online, as they sell out fast. Give yourself two hours, charge your camera, and try to ignore the selfie-stick wall.
