Don't bother with a guide if you just want photos; the view from the Goryokaku Tower observation deck explains the star-shaped geometry better than any human can. Go during cherry blossom season or mid-winter when the moat lights up at night. Budget 60 minutes for the park walk and elevator lines. Skip the pricey private day tours unless you really need the chauffeur, as the park is easily walkable from the tram station.
