It is a straight shot up to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, which you actually need a ticket for once you land. Go on a clear weekday morning to dodge the tour bus crowds. It takes about 10 minutes each way, so budget two hours total. Don't bother with the round trip if you're feeling a descent via footpath.
