Skip the manicured gardens; this place is pure chaos. You will climb into the gaping mouth of Orcus and wander past giant stone tortoises and screaming heads. It takes about two hours to walk the whole loop. Go early to beat the tour groups from Civitavecchia, or you will be stuck behind selfies. Wear actual sneakers because the terrain is uneven. It is weird, off-putting, and totally worth the detour if you appreciate dark, historical fanfiction.
