Shwenandaw Monastery: Intricate Teak Carvings & Royal History
★4.8(64)
Skip the crowded city tours and spend an hour wandering this massive teak structure. It’s the only original building remaining from Mandalay’s former royal palace. The dark wood panels feature incredibly detailed carvings of jataka stories that deserve a closer look. Visit around 3pm to catch the golden hour light hitting the carvings, which makes for better photos. Hire a local guide for context on the history, otherwise it’s just a cool building. Wear socks, as shoes aren't allowed.
Address: 62nd St., Mandalay, Myanmar
