Don't bother with the bus tours unless you enjoy motion sickness on narrow cliff roads. The lower monastery is fine, but the upper church carved directly into the rock face is why you made the trip. Expect a steep, hour-long trek if you want the full pilgrim experience. Dress modestly—no knees or shoulders—or they will stop you at the door. Budget three hours total and go early to beat the humid afternoon lines.
