Skip the crowded shuttle bus and take the vertical climb up Putucusi if your knees can handle it. You deal with near-vertical wooden ladders and mud, so wear boots with actual grip. The hike takes about two hours round-trip, but the bird’s-eye view of Machu Picchu from the summit is the only way to see the ruins without a selfie stick in your face. Go early, avoid rainy days, and bring plenty of water.
