The cable car ride up to 3,000 meters offers insane views of the Bernina massif, but the summit restaurant is overpriced and crowded. Skip the actual glacier hike if you haven't booked a guide; the terrain gets dangerous fast. Go for the sunrise breakfast at the Berghaus instead—watching the light hit Piz Palü is the only reason to deal with the mountain air. Give it three hours and get back down to Pontresina.
