Skip the generic day tours and book an early morning private guide to beat the bus loads of tourists at the Yomeimon Gate. The intricate wood carvings, especially the 'see no evil' monkeys, deserve a close look, but the sheer amount of gold leaf is the real flex. Spend at least two hours wandering the massive complex. It is a steep walk, so wear decent sneakers and bring cash for the smaller sub-shrines.
