Don't bother visiting if you hate walking; these gardens are built on a steep slope. Spend three hours roaming the different climate zones, but definitely hit the Sissi Promenade for the best photo ops. The view from the Matteo Thun-designed viewing platform is worth the hike alone. Skip the overpriced cafe inside and grab an espresso in Merano town instead. Go in May when the rhododendrons actually pop. Wear sneakers or you'll regret it.
