Trip Logistics FAQ
Can I visit Alcatraz and still make it to Monterey on the first day?
While technically possible, the Alcatraz tour takes about 3 hours and is in North San Francisco, while Monterey is a 2.5-hour drive south. It is best to stay in SF the first night to avoid rushing through the city's landmarks.
Is the drive through Big Sur manageable in a standard rental car?
Yes, a standard car is fine, but ensure you have a full tank of gas before leaving Carmel. The roads are winding and steep in sections, so drivers should be comfortable with heights and narrow passages.
How do I handle parking for the Santa Barbara Trolley?
There are several public parking lots near the Garden Street visitor center where the trolley departs. Santa Barbara is very walkable, so parking once and exploring the downtown area on foot between activities is highly recommended.
Do I need to book the Warner Bros Studio tour in advance?
Yes, this is one of the most popular tours in Los Angeles and time slots frequently sell out weeks ahead of time. Booking the 10:00 slot ensures you finish before the worst of the afternoon traffic peak.
Does the Carmel electric bike tour enter the 17-Mile Drive?
Most guided e-bike tours follow the coastal road south of the 17-Mile Drive toward Point Lobos or Carmel River Beach. We have scheduled the 17-Mile Drive as a separate driving audio tour to ensure you see the Pebble Beach landmarks comfortably.
How much extra time should I allow for Los Angeles traffic?
In Los Angeles, a 10-mile drive can take anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes. For the transition between the Warner Bros tour and the Hollywood bus, we have built in a 90-minute buffer to account for unpredictable Burbank-to-Hollywood congestion.
